Twitter Celebrates the Tenth Birthday of the Hashtag

125 million hashtags Tweeted per day

Today, August 23rd 2017, Twitter celebrates the tenth birthday of the hashtag. On this day ten years ago, Twitter user Chris Messina @chrismessina Tweeted #barcamp, the first time a hashtag was used on Twitter.

Since then, the hashtag has evolved from a way to categorise Tweets, to a fun way to add commentary to a Tweet and to a powerful tool in creating global conversations and connecting people to form movements. The hashtag has now become a part of our everyday language.

From monumental world events and awareness campaigns, to weekly throwback pics, it all happens with a hashtag, and it all happens on Twitter.

From #InternationalWomensDay, #HarryPotter20, #LoveIsLove, #RoseofTralee and #GAA,  hashtags have become a part of international events and everyday conversation alike. Hashtags have helped to shape some of the most important moments, conversations, and movements across the world over the past ten years.

Today, we celebrate the evolution of the symbol, with a look back over some of the key moments over the past decade that were defined by the creation or allocation of a hashtag.

From large scale sporting events like the Olympic Games in #London2012, to global movements such as the #icebucketchallenge shining a light on ALS in 2014, to events that have shook the world and joined us together in solidarity like the Paris attacks in 2015 with #JeSuisCharlie, #PrayforParis, the international community joined the global conversation on Twitter.

Sinead McSweeney, Vice-President of Public Policy and Communication for Twitter EMEA, and Managing Director of Twitter Ireland, commented on the 10th anniversary; “10 years ago, the hashtag was created by a Twitter user and has since evolved from a way to categorise Tweets, to a fun way to add commentary to a Tweet and to a powerful tool in creating global conversations and connecting people to form movements. Hashtags have helped to shape some of the most important moments, conversations, and movements across the world over the past ten years.”
